CANOE RACE An unseasonably warm afternoon greeted the freshman engineering students and masses ofstudents and alumni spectators on Friday, October 11, at the annual Cardboard Canoe race. Donned in life vests, the eager engineering students prepared to test their carefully constructed canoes in the murky waters ofCedar Lake. Not only did these students need to cross the lake, but they also competed for the fastest time. The canoe pulling in first place was the African Queen. Along with the engineering students, several ofthe academic departments also tried building and racing their own canoes. While the math and science department's origami canoe sank at the starting dock, the education department pulled away for their second consecutive victory. The afternoon came to a close with the second annual canoe "demolition derby." The remaining lake-worthy canoes headed back into Cedar Lake to battle to the death. After a valiant fight, The Lucky Number sat alone in the lake to claim first place. Peter Locke and Yu-Te Steven Change carefully manuever across Cedar Lake. 52 FALL SEMESTER
