r he Cedarville Women's Tennis team aced the beginning oftheir season, winning their first eight matches handily. Then,in mid-April,the ladies suffered a setback, losing five matches in a row.Numberone singles player Alisa Rutt, however, lost only twice at singles throughout the regular season, bringing her career singles record to 32-13.The second doublesteam of Laura McCully and Betsy Verwys also played well and finished with an 8-2 record. A major change thatthese ladies underwentthroughout their season wasthe changing of head coaches.Pam Johnson, theformer head coach, stepped down due to her deanship responsibilities atthe university.Dee Morris wasthen named the head coach after serving as the assistant coach since 1977. While the girls were sad to see Coach Johnson leave, they knew they still had her support and would be well taken care of by Coach Morris. Another memorable event ofthe season involved the mission trip thatthe team took to the Dominican Republic over Spring Break. All ofthe team members echoed junior player Jade Burley when she said,"Myfavorite memories are definitely from the Dominican Republic! It was great seeing each girl in her element...We were stretched, and from that we were able to encourage and challenge each other. i was able to getto know each ofthe girls better...my respect and love for them grew."When looking back on the season, junior Melinda Workman said,"We started out strong.Toward the second half ofour season we had a little difficulty keeping up our intensity as wefaced some difficult matches, but we tried our best to pull it together at the end and finish strong."In the end, freshman Carissa Parmerlee said,"We played strong and had fun doing it,"and that was all that mattered. 4Tea,*064celi A Senior Betsy Verwys runs toward the ball as her partner watches with anticipation. In looking to the future,Verwys says,"1 feel like the best is yetto come!"
