Alumnotes, Fall/Winter 2012

You’ve probably noticed … this isn’t the Inspire you were expecting! Debuting early in 2013, our new Cedarville Magazine will combine the best of Torch and Inspire to provide Christ- centered perspectives on critical issues through the eyes of the Cedarville family. While we are working to develop a new and improved magazine, we wanted to keep you in touch with your fellow alumni and share news from Homecoming 2012, the conclusion to our yearlong 125th anniversary celebration. One highlight came during Friday evening’s Legacy Banquet. We presented seven alumni awards and recognized one of our oldest alumni, Geraldine Henry ’34, who turns 100 in April! You may have heard that Dr. Bill Brown is stepping down as President at the end of June ( cedarville.edu/transition ). It has been an honor and a privilege to serve under his leadership, and I am grateful for all he has taught me over the last 10 years. Although he will be greatly missed in that role, we trust in God, and we anticipate what He has in store for Cedarville’s future. I recently visited Word of Life Bible Institute in upstate New York. Dr. Brown was speaking in chapel there, and he and I hosted a Cedarville alumni event with more than 20 alumni and parents. While there, I connected with alumni representing four decades. Many were former classmates, some were former students I employed years ago, one was one of those “Cedarville icons” I heard about as a student 25 years ago, and some were new friends I just met. I heard this common theme in their stories: through all life’s experiences — good times and bad — God has been faithful. The same can certainly be said for Cedarville University. While I don’t imagine I’ll be around for Cedarville’s next 125 years, I am thrilled to have been part of the growth we’ve experienced in the last 30 years — and I look forward to seeing what God will continue to do here. As our Chancellor, Dr. Paul Dixon, has said, “The only explanation for Cedarville is God.” As I think of God’s faithfulness to Cedarville — past, present, and future — I am reminded of lyrics from Never Once by Matt Redman, Jason Ingram, and Tim Wanstall: Standing on this mountaintop Looking just how far we’ve come Knowing that for every step You were with us Kneeling on this battle ground Seeing just how much You’ve done Knowing every victory Was Your power in us Scars and struggles on the way But with joy our hearts can say Yes, our hearts can say Never once did we ever walk alone Never once did You leave us on our own You are faithful, God, You are faithful Every step we are breathing in Your grace Evermore we’ll be breathing out Your praise You are faithful, God, You are faithful Jeff Beste ’87 Director of Alumni Relations A L UMNOT E Fall/Winter 2012 share your news Did you get promoted?
