THMU-251 Music Engraving 1-W 2 hours The first of a two-part series in music copying using the FINALE software program. Provides complete hands-on training using FINALE speedy-entry method for notation. Included are studies in hard manuscript copying, MAC orientation, study of FINALE, standard FINALE menu items, special menu items, mass mover, playback assignments, creating scores, creation of templates, title tool, articulation, metatool, page setup, and more. Requires at least two hours lab each week. THMU-252 Music Engraving II-Sp 2 hours The second of a two-part series in music copying using the FINALE software program. Provides hands-on training using FINALE speedy-entry and hyper-scribe methods for notation. Included are studies in page layout, title tool, text blocks, page setup, extracting parts, editing and printing scores, lyric entry, chord entry, changing fonts for chords, chord editing, rhythm chart notation, percussion notation, FINALE special tools, and finale shape designer. Application is made to transferring notation to sequencing programs for playback purposes. Requires at least two hours lab each week. THMU-310 Counterpoint-Sp 3 hours A survey of polyphonic music of the 18th century including analysis and experimental writing of species counterpoint, canon, two-patt inventions, fugal expositions, and trio sonata movements. Prerequisite: THMU-225 Theory V. THMU-314 Functional Keyboard Sldlls-A 3 hours The development of skills in harmonization at sight, transposition, playing by ear, and other keyboard hannony skills specifically designed to meet the piano proficiency requirements. Prerequisite: pennission of the instructor. THMU-322 Synthesizer Applications in Music-W 2 hours An in-depth examination of synthesizer technology in a lab setting including synthesizer programming and performance techniques, implementation of MIDI standards into a music workstation, and multitrack recording of elech·onic instmments. Music THMU-323 Computer Applications in Music-Sp 2 hours Evaluation of computer technology with specific applications to an electronic music studio including use of computers with MIDI, sequencing, music notation, and performance. Prerequisite: THMU-322 Synthesizer Applications in Music. THMU-324 MIDI Clinic-Sp 1 hour Designed to move students past the basics of using MIDI into a hands-on, individualized clinic. Each student will work on MIDI projects of particular interest to him/her with specific goals outlined by the instructor. Prerequisites: THMU-322 Synthesizer Applica– tions in Music; THMU-323 Computer Applications in Music. THMU-411 Form and Analysis-W 3 hours A study of the structure of music approached through analysis of representative works. Prerequisite: THMU-222 The01y VI. THMU-413 Orchestration-A 3 hom·s A course designed to develop skills in scoring music for various instrumental groups. Prerequisite: THMU-226 Theory VI. THMU-414 Choral Arranging-W 3 hours A study of arranging for the choral medium. Includes principles of arranging for children, youth, and adult choirs. Special attention given to arranging for large and small choral ensembles as accompa– nied by a variety of media including congregation, live instruments, MIDI, video enhanced and audio sound tracks. Students learn to write chord charts for use in church and commercial venues. Class presentation of student arrangements in a concert setting is pro– vided. Prerequisite: CHMU-350 Church Music Administration; THMU-251 Music Engraving I; CHMU-353,354 Church Music Methods and Materials I,11. THMU-499 Independent Study in Composition and Arranging-A,W,Sp,Su 1-4 hours Independent and intensive study in a particular area of music theory for individual students who demonstrate special interests and ability. Repeatable up to four credits. The new music department.facilities, located in the Ministry Center, include 14 instructional studios, 20 practice rooms, four «o1>om·en 1 a piano pedagogy suite, a piano laborat01y, a computer laborato1J', three specialized classrooms, a large conference room, and a beautifiil 250-seat recital hall.
