Some years ago a De troit bishop asserted that Lincoln was a Roman Catholic in early life. Mrs. Ed. A shooting affray between Cedar, ville parties occurred in Clifton, just across the Clark county line Friday night o f last week, in which Pete Hamilton slightly wounded Charier Spencer. 'There was a dance among the colored gentry o f Clifton and the altercation occurred over the fact that Spencer was too intimate with Hamil ton’s wife. Hamilton was arrested the next day and bound over to court, spencer was not SO badly hurt as to1’ k* laid up any length o f time. That Kansas Lady-Mayor. Rev. G. L. Tufts recently received the following communication from Kiowa, Kansas: “ Dr. Rachel S. Packsou is our Mayor’s name. The petition she re ceived (to resign her office) was signed by thirty-people. A t least half o f the business men did not sign. The peti tion was first started by a saloon man, was circulated hv him, and by the self-same law breakers was presented to the Mayor. But she is not goin.f to resign; it 1ms only helped to rouse tho people to see*where the town was drifting. t ■ This town is only about a mile from the Cherokee strip, and has always been a trading place for the cowboys, and saloons have always been allowed to run open without a word being said against it. The saloon men would be visited each"month by the City Mar shal, who would collect the fine, which they each paid. * * * . We have a Law and Order League organized, and we expect to do our level best to see that the law is enforc ed. There is, o f course, great oppo sition to the law by the drinkers, but it is the best law I know of to keep the hoys from becoming drunkards. I came from Illinois and the Prohibi tory law (o f Kan.) beats the high license law (o f 111.) two to >one for keeping the hoys Bafc. Many places in Kansas are so dry thnt hut those who can to a certainty he trusted are able to find a drink. But when I look out over the whole State, and I have been over a good portion o f it, I am glad to say that the law is a success. Not that men cannot get liquor, but it does work in stopping the business as no other law ean. The laws against stealing and killing are broken, but we count them good. Praise God for prohibition, and the people of, Kansas are not going back on the law either,” W il l W. F arrell , , Pastor M. E. Ohurcb, Kiowa, Kan,, Oct, 24 ,1891.
