Long-time Faculty Retires In 1995, Jeff completed his Master of Library Science degree at Kent State and later earned a Master of Arts in Biblical Studies from Faith Baptist Theological Seminary. Reflecting his longstanding interest in the Christian dimensions of librarianship, Jeff contributed a chapter to the book The Faithful Librarian, a collection of essays exploring the library profession through a Christian lens. Jeff was an active member of the Association of Christian Librarians, regularly attending the annual conference, frequently as a presenter. In his role at Cedarville, Jeff provided research support to students taking Bible or theology courses as well as students in general education courses. Jeff enjoyed digging deeply into research questions, discussing how Christianity and librarianship intersected, and thinking through models of research and scholarly inquiry. Among his colleagues, Jeff was known for his self-effacing humility, his passion for sustained reflection, and his deep love of puns. Jeff and his wife Charlotte are long-time members at Dayton Avenue Baptist Church in Xenia and both have served in multiple ways there. Long-time library employee Jeff Gates retired at the end of the 2023-24 academic year, completing 17 years of service at the library. Jeff served as Information Services Librarian and as the library liaison to the School of Biblical and Theological Studies. He had been at Cedarville in that role since 2007. Previously, Jeff had served as Head Librarian at Faith Baptist Bible College and Seminary in Ankeny, Iowa and as a pastor in Kearney, Nebraska. Library Careers Student Presents at Conference Senior Linguistics major Justin Kemp presented a lightning round session at the Academic Library Association of Ohio annual conference in Dublin, Ohio, on November 8, 2024. His presentation “Bilingual Picture Books in the Curriculum Materials Center: Equipping Education Students for Multilingual Classrooms” included tips for librarians who want to expand their collections in the three categories of bilingual picture books he discovered. The presentation was part of Justin’s Linguistics Special Topics course, Multilingual Libraries, under the direction of Professor Julie Deardorff. In the Fall issue of Musical Offerings, two recent Cedarville alumni examine the relationship between music composition, religion, and poetry. Abigail Lilite explores the influence of W. H. Auden on composer Benjamin Britten and the nature of poetry within music composition in her article “The Gift He Gave Us”. In a second article “Deliver Us from Obscurity,” Lilite analyzes the work of another British composer, William Byrd, noting the influence of persecution and his Catholic faith in his music. Finally, Caden J. Lantz investigates the relationship between German poems and German Romantic musical compositions in “German Poetry in Musical Motion” analyzing the undertones of lyrical verse in such composers as Schubert and Liszt. Musical Offerings is an undergraduate journal of musicology published by the School of Arts of Humanities at Cedarville University. Musical Offerings publishes two issues a year under the editorial direction of Dr. Sandra Yang. The latest issue is available in print and online in DigitalCommons@Cedarville, the institutional repository of Cedarville University. DIGITAL COMMONS PUBLISHING CORNER Poetry and Composition: New Issue of Musical Offerings! For centuries, prior to the invention of printing in the Western world, the text of the Bible was preserved in manuscript form. From the hand-copied manuscripts of the post-New Testament and Medieval periods to the Bibles of the early Reformation period, the text of Scripture was preserved by God to assure that the words of God--His plan, principles, and purposes--would be accessible to man created in His image. The Centennial Library’s current Biblical Heritage Gallery exhibit “Preserved by Hand: The Bible from Manuscript to Gutenberg” presents examples of manuscript portions of the Bible from the 1st to the 15th centuries. You can explore this history from the Dead Sea Scrolls to the first printed Bible, either in-person at the library or online. Biblical Heritage Gallery Scan the QR code to visit the virtual exhibit

Buy it online Borrow from the library What inspired you to pursue putting this book together? There is an ongoing conversation in contemporary philosophy about moral luck. Many philosophers use the idea of luck to argue that people are not responsible for their actions and - hence - that they cannot be punished for their wrongdoing. I think that is mistaken, and it occurred to me that most Christians did too. I tried to explain why Christians might reason that way given their theological commitments. How might this book challenge and grow a reader? This book would be a significant challenge for most lay readers because it deals with some technical issues in biblical interpretation and the philosophy of action. My goal is to give a philosophical account of the sort of "natural" reaction of most Christians to the problem presented by moral luck. What did you learn through this book project? The project helped me to solidify my account of moral action and the analysis of responsibility. It also showed me some further places in which contemporary philosophical discourses run afoul of some structurally significant theological ideas. Spotlight on Faculty Publishing Faculty in Print J.
