Inspire, Fall 1992

From The Director's Chair W orking at Cedarville College has some great advantages. It's the middle ofthe afternoon and I'm eating a piece of delicious strawberry pie provided by Don Rickard, vice president for student services. There's always something to do on Friday night with basketball games, concert series, and other activities on campus. My collection of T-shirts and sweatshirts has grown because ofthe new line of alumni apparel. I get to take alumni out to lunch at some great Miami Valley restaurants. Listening to the wisdom of mature Christians in chapel really makes the daily battles easier to handle. Being able to talk with nationally-known pastors and Christian workers leads to tremendous opportunities. I've learned how to ski since coming to Cedarville and we're planning a second Alumni Ski Weekend for 1993.I get to travel to different parts of the country for alumni gatherings and see all the historic sights.(I had never been to Niagara Falls before!)Getting married to Ben Smith '86 has been a great advantage, too! But do you know whatI really enjoy...collecting drawings from alums'children. When alumni stop by and have their toddlers with them,I hand them a piece of paper and markers. In return I get great masterpieces. It was a greatjoy to welcome Drew Miller and Kelsey Ruby to the world as a future generation of Cedarville alumni. I really like the long country drives with Eleanor Cooley Finney '39. She points out which alums live where, and we admire the flower gardens on the way.Or when the Heritage Alumnae break into the old Cedarville song at their annual luncheon,I want to sing along. Watching 417 new graduatesjoin the Cedarville College Alumni Association is a thrill. Working on the Inspire puts me in touch with so many alumni as we prepare the articles, alumnotes, and special features. I get to catch up with college friends like Dave Olsen '84 and Angela Cooke'84 as well as meet new friends who are alumni of Cedarville. Working with committees to plan a great party for alumni to enjoy is an advantage of my work.I guess that's why I love Homecoming.(Hope you can attend this year!)It's also refreshing to work with the Alumni Council. The eight individuals who represent you have great ideas,a heart for alumni, and wonderful insights. It's encouraging to know that alumni support Cedarville College in so many ways. Some alumni assist students by creating specific scholarship funds; others make themselves available for current students to call and ask questions about career paths; still others encourage teens to look at Cedarville College for higher education by bringing them to campus even if it means investing in airfare. Your support ofthe Annual Fund continues to grow because faithful alumni give year after year and young alumni follow that example. Alumni also support new buildings, the computer network, and new academic programs. To put it simply...it's the people I enjoy. In the past two years of working with alumni,it has been a pleasure to build friendships.
