SCIENCE CORE ENROLLMENT
MAKING THE CASE FOR
SCIENCE
CEDARVILLE’S CURRENT LAB SPACE WAS BUILT IN 1973.
In the past 40
years,
ENROLLMENT IN SCIENCES COURSES HAS GROWN FROM LESS
THAN 200 TO NEARLY 1,600
, as new professional programs—built on a
strong science foundation—have been added.
As students attend classes in modern facilities elsewhere on campus, they
crowd into science labs that are noticeably outdated. Interest in our programs
could decrease as prospective students compare our facilities with competitor
schools. Our existing facilities present the following challenges:
• Five or more students share lab and fume hood space designed for one.
• Chemistry, geology, and plant biology programs share the same lab space,
necessitating equipment setup and teardown after each class period.
• One classroom is used for 10 labs, scheduled for 21 hours each week.
• Anatomy class has no dedicated space, which creates cadaver storage
concerns and a formaldehyde odor throughout the floor.
• Instrumentation lab space limitations and out-of-date equipment renders
current student and faculty research unpublishable.
